About the museum
The Stadsmuseum Hof van Hessen in Huissen belongs to the Historische Kring Huessen, a history society founded in 1975. The society initially collected sources and archaeological finds on the history of the town, which once belonged to Cleves and later passed to the Netherlands. For a long time the Kring worked in two rooms in the town hall; from 1990 the former rector's residence of the Sisters Penitents on Vierakkerstraat came into view as a new home.
The planned demolition of the house was abandoned, the Kring rented it at a symbolic price and converted it with its own team of volunteer builders. Instead of the planned one year, the conversion took three years; the furnishings largely come from donations and purchases. The museum opened on 8 April 1995, and since then volunteers have welcomed visitors at the reception desk.
In March 2024 the large hall of the permanent exhibition was rebuilt and redesigned. Instead of being chronological, the exhibition is now organised by themes, including "Leven aan de Limes" (Roman Huissen), the Cleves town of Huissen, and war, destruction and return after 1945. Upstairs there is a room for temporary exhibitions. The society also publishes books, offers town walks and runs a small museum shop.
