About the museum
Around 1300 the counts and dukes of Guelders had a castle built in Rozendaal, which served as accommodation on their travels. The donjon dates from this period, a round tower with walls four metres thick, the largest of its kind preserved in the Netherlands. From the 16th century the estate was owned in turn by the Van Dorth, Van Arnhem, Torck and Van Pallandt families.
In 1616 a new residence was added, which was often altered over the centuries, among other things with a side wing containing a carriage house and stable. The present furnishings in historical style show the house's last heyday at the beginning of the 20th century, when the couple Van Pallandt-Loudon lived here. Objects left behind, for example in the library, were supplemented by many loans and donations; of particular note is the large portrait collection that Baron Van Pallandt has placed with the Brantsen-van-de-Zyp Foundation.
The castle includes a landscape park with 18th-century garden ornaments: the Bedriegertjes (hidden water jokes), the shell gallery, a tea pavilion, as well as ponds and fountains. The orangery is still used to overwinter the large collection of potted plants. The castle is run by Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen, which opens seven castles and country houses in Gelderland to visitors.
