About the museum

The Stadsmuseum Rhenen is located in the Oude Raadhuis on the Markt, one of the town's finest architectural monuments, not far from the medieval Cunerakerk. The building is a Rijksmonument of medieval origin. The museum, formerly "Het Rondeel" on Kerkstraat, moved here in 2018 and took its current name. The building also houses the VVV, a museum café with a wedding room, and a garden.

The permanent exhibition presents Rhenen in three themes: Treasures, Struggle and Beauty. The "Treasures" room shows finds from Rhenen's soil, from hand axes and the jaw of a woolly mammoth to a bucket-shaped grave urn about 2,800 years old and Frankish coin hoards and gold chains. It also tells of the pilgrimage site of Saint Cunera and of the palace of the Winter King Frederick of the Palatinate and Elizabeth Stuart.

The "Strijd" room deals with the sieges of the border town, the capture of 1499, Spanish soldiers' helmets from the moat infill, the Grebbe Line and the Battle of the Grebbeberg in May 1940, in which the town was largely destroyed, as well as its reconstruction. "Schoonheid" shows Rhenen as a favourite of painters with paintings and drawings.
