About the museum

The museum shows the history of the village of Amerongen on the border between the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the river floodplains. The Heemkundige Stichting Amerongen (local history foundation) was founded in 1976 to preserve the village's history. From 1983, municipal workers and volunteers restored a tobacco barn, using beams, boards, stones and windows from the neighboring Napoleon barn. In 1984 the building opened as the Historisch Museum Amerongen, with tobacco growing as its main theme.

In 2009 the province and the municipality decided to focus entirely on tobacco growing; after a thorough restoration of the barn, the museum was re-established as the Tabaksteeltmuseum. Amerongen, however, has more history than tobacco alone, so the concept was expanded in 2025. Since its reopening on April 2, 2025, the building has again been called Amerongs Historisch Museum and looks at the village more broadly.

The themes range from the village's role as a resting place on the trade route between Utrecht and Cologne, through military events and about 300 years of tobacco growing, to crafts and the stories of villagers. On tobacco, tools, historical photos and interactive stations show the process from sowing to drying, and its economic consequences. The large archive of digitized photos is open on the last Friday of every month in the evening at the Allemanswaard. The museum is run entirely by volunteers.
