About the museum
The museum is located in the house of the former specialist cigar shop of the firm 't Mannetje, which Rein and Nel 't Mannetje opened in 1941. After her husband's death in 1958, Nel continued the business until 1968. It was then taken over by Louis Bracco Gartner, who had married Reina, the couple's daughter; by then the house also contained a post office.
The collection began with a bucket of clay pipes excavated in Delft, which Gartner bought. While cleaning them he discovered the great variety of shapes, stems and marks; the pipe collection grew to more than 12,000 pieces. To these were added cigar boxes, tobacco tins, snuff boxes, advertising material, packaging and tools.
The museum has existed since 2004 and shows how the tobacco trade in Delft developed from the 17th century onwards: from Delft clay pipes and blue-painted tobacco jars and tiles with smoking figures to the city's cigar and tobacco factories. It is among the smallest but, by its own account, most complete museums in the Netherlands and can only be visited by arrangement.
