About the museum

Museum De Tiid is housed in the listed former town hall of Bolsward and is part of the Cultuur Historisch Centrum De Tiid, which opened in 2021 as the cultural heart of south-west Friesland. Under one roof, the venue combines museum, municipal archive, library and citizen services; King Willem-Alexander performed the inauguration.

The Titus Brandsma Museum has also been merged into it: it was previously housed on Grote Dijlakker, where it closed at the end of 2020, and has since shown its collection in the town hall. Since July 2022, the presentation “In het voetspoor van Titus Brandsma” traces the eventful life of the priest and journalist, who was canonised in May 2022.

The permanent presentation tells of the character of south-west Friesland and of the history of the town hall with its tower, council chamber and staircase. Figures such as Titus Brandsma and the Frisian poet Gysbert Japicx guide visitors through regional history. On interactive screens, visitors can give their opinion on questions of history and identity. On guided tours, the tower platform is also accessible, which otherwise may not be entered.
