About the museum

The museum “it Tsiispakhûs” (“the cheese warehouse”) is located in Wommels in a former cheese warehouse dating from 1905, which is now a Rijksmonument. The inscription “Kaashandel” can be read again in the roof area since the building was comprehensively restored in 2023: masonry and pointing work, repair of the windows and the leaking tiled roof, rainwater drainage and painting. The small regional museum could only cover the costs with the help of several foundations, funds and the national heritage agency.

The house is run by a volunteer board; it is a registered museum. On the upper floor the permanent exhibition shows how cheese and butter used to be made: old dairy equipment, cheese boards with cheese, historic film footage of cheese-making on the farm, and pictures of the first dairy factories. QR codes and tablets provide further information on many objects.

With the programme “Kaasmaken in grootmoederstijd” school classes can experience how the farmhand and the dairymaid worked in their grandmothers’ time. Outside the building there are façade gardens with native plants.
