About the museum
The Helpoort is considered the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands. It belongs to Maastricht's first city wall, whose construction took around thirty years; the gate was probably finished around 1250, while the city rights date from 1229. It was later improved with a vault and a portcullis. Over the centuries the building served as a meeting place for cloth fullers and boatmen, as a powder tower, arsenal, warehouse and dwelling. In 1881 it was restored and became the official residence of the caretaker of the Reichsarchiv (state archive). In 1947 the city bought the gate back and rented it to an artist as a studio.
Today the gate is in the care of the Stiftung Maastricht Vestingstad (foundation). The foundation has run an information center there since 1997, which reopened as the Vestingmuseum Maastricht after a complete redesign on September 25, 2021. The house explains how the city was fortified over the centuries: there are traces of the Romans and Merovingians, the medieval city walls, and the fortifications of the 17th to 19th centuries, including Fort Sint Pieter and Fort Willem. Interactive touchscreens and touch tables make these layers tangible; since 2022 an interactive city model of Maastricht also shows the city before the fortress was largely demolished.
The entrance is hidden on a small square; inside, you climb historic spiral staircases. The west tower still has its original stacked staircase with 66 steps, and the east tower a 15th-century spiral staircase with 68 steps.
