About the museum

The brewery in the Maastricht district of Wyck was founded in 1758 and initially bore a different name before becoming the brewery "De Keyzer" under the Vliex family. Through marriage, Nicolaas Antoon Bosch joined the business around 1820; from 1827 he ran it and developed it into one of the larger breweries in the city. His descendants kept the brewery in family ownership for 181 years. Its heyday was between 1880 and 1914; during the First World War, the business even supplied malt to Heineken. After the Second World War it declined, and brewing ceased in 1970.

The complex includes a five-story malt house, built between 1882 and 1885 and considered the largest and most modern in South Limburg; the brewery with steam engines, storage tanks and a bottle-rinsing plant; and the brewer's house at Rechtstraat 61, with rare marble imitations and arcadian wall paintings from the late 19th century. The buildings have been national monuments (Rijksmonumenten) since 1996. They were restored from the 1980s onward. The last descendant of the family, Paul Bosch, devoted himself to their preservation and, after his death in 2008, bequeathed everything to the foundation established in 2000.

Today the foundation runs the brewery as an industrial monument and museum with around 35 volunteers. Income comes from tours with beer tasting and the occasional rental of parts of the building; the beers served are brewed elsewhere. Other users are the Stiftung Maastricht 1867, which has a city model in the malt house, and a model railway club in the cellar.
