About the museum
The Zijper Museum preserves the history of the Zijpe polder in the north of North Holland. It was founded in 1973 as the Oudheidkamer (local history room) of the then municipality of Zijpe, which also looked after the house. Since its founding, operations have been run entirely by volunteers; today more than forty people are involved in the museum. In 1999 the house received its current name and was entered in the Dutch museum register.
The permanent exhibition "Polder de Zijpe" is interactive and focuses on people: it begins with the painter Jan van Scorel, who dreamed of a polder between Petten and Texel, and asks who made this dream come true and who populated the Zijpe through the centuries. For the redesign, the museum worked with specialist firms for exhibition design, fundraising and websites.
The collection includes objects from the Zijpe that have been gathered since 1973, as well as the two photo collections Niestadt and Ter Beziens with around 80,000 portrait photographs from Schagen and the surrounding area. A library serves as a study room for genealogy and local history; two cycling and walking routes with an app make the history of the Zijpe tangible outdoors.
