About the museum
Bietilægården lies in Indrebyen in Vadsø, formerly called Indre kvenby (Inner Kven town), and is a coastal and farming culture built by Kven immigrants. The site has a dwelling house, three cowsheds, a quay with a nøstebu (net storehouse) and a slipway for hauling up boats. It is a Varanger house of type 4, in which the dwelling and the outbuilding are connected by a bridge.
Henrik Bietilæ and Anna Grethe had the plot surveyed in 1879 and built a small log house and a cowshed. They had nine children, and several of them died young. The farm was extended over time, and around 1910 the main house was extended in Swiss style (sveitserstil) and divided into four flats. The family built boats on the slipway, among them the fishing boat “Stenstrand” (1916–1919).
The farm was protected in 1990 and restored from 1998. Vadsø municipality took it over in 2003, and today it is managed by Varanger museum.
