About the museum
Dokken museum lies just across the bridge to Hasseløy in Haugesund. The green yard is surrounded by several buildings and shows everyday life in the herring town between 1850 and 1950. The first houses in Dokken were built almost two hundred years ago, and the name comes from a small, enclosed harbour for herring boats that once lay here and was later filled in.
In summer, visitors can see period settings with, among other things, living quarters, a herring salting house, a cooperage workshop and a general store. The ticket includes a guided tour of the houses, where a maid or the lady of the house takes guests back in time. The boathouse has an extensive boat exhibition, and the photo collection “Livet mellom husene” (Life between the Houses) shows everyday life of the period.
The green yard is a good playground for children, and the museum has its own activities for nursery schools and schools. In winter, “Jul i Dokken” (Christmas in Dokken) is held from 29 November to 20 December. The museum is part of Haugalandmuseet.
