About the museum
Herdla Museum is housed in a new, modern building by Herdla fort on the small island of Herdla, at the northern tip of Askøy. The museum offers views over the island and the skerries, which were once of strategic importance. The main attraction is the wreck of a German Second World War fighter aircraft, a Focke-Wulf 190, which is displayed in a separate hall under the name “Gul 16” (Yellow 16).
Almost until the early 2000s, Herdla torpedo battery was a top-secret defence installation. Today the fully equipped battery is protected as a cultural heritage site and can be experienced on guided tours on set dates. A compact local-history exhibition tells the story of Herdla with pictures, film, text and selected objects. Herdla is also known for its bird reserve and nature. The museum is run by Stiftelsen Museum Vest.
