About the museum
Kiellandsenteret opened in 2019 on level 4 of Sølvberget library and cultural centre in central Stavanger. The centre is a meeting place for literature, reading and writing, and is dedicated to the author Alexander L. Kielland (1849–1906), Stavanger's best-known writer and one of the most important representatives of realism in Norwegian literature.
The exhibitions give an insight into Kielland's life and authorship, the time he lived in and what shaped his literature. The Kielland collection consists of first editions of his fiction, translations into many languages, collections of letters and books that belonged to the author, in addition to articles, manuscripts and newspaper cuttings. The collection also includes a portrait series of Kielland made for the Kielland jubilee in 1999, sketches by Gunnar Eide and a bust by Ludvig Nygren.
The centre also has writers' offices, study places and a café, and the programme includes literary conversations, lectures, reading circles and writing groups. Kiellandsenteret is a central part of Kapittelfestivalen (the Chapter Festival), where the annual Kielland Lecture is one of the highlights. Upper secondary school pupils can book class visits.
