About the museum
The Museum Oszpicin is run by the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation. Its task is to preserve the memory of the Jewish inhabitants of Oświęcim and to educate against hatred. Jews settled in the town in the 16th century and called it Oszpicin, from a Yiddish word meaning guests.
The museum is located at Plac ks. J. Skarbka in the centre of the old town and forms a complex with the historic synagogue Chewra Lomdej Misznajot, the only surviving Jewish house of prayer in Oświęcim, and the Café Bergson. The museum and the synagogue are entered through the café.
The permanent exhibition “Oszpicin. History of Jewish Oświęcim” presents nearly 400 years of the history of the local community, up to the Holocaust, in which almost the entire Jewish population of the town perished. The story is based on objects, documents and photographs. The collections can also be viewed in an online catalogue, and a phone application guides visitors around the town.
