About the museum
The Zamek Museum in Oświęcim (Muzeum Zamek w Oświęcimiu) began operating on 1 January 2010 as a municipal cultural institution. Its task is to collect and display archaeological, historical and ethnographic objects connected with Oświęcim and the Oświęcim Land, and to bring the history of the town closer to residents and visitors.
The castle hill was already settled in the 11th century, and from the 12th century a castellan's stronghold stood on it. After it was destroyed by the Tatars in 1241, the site was rebuilt and a brick defence tower was erected, the oldest structure on the hill. In the 14th century the castle was the seat of the Dukes of Oświęcim of the Piast line, and after 1457 royal starosts resided in it. It burnt down in 1503 and was rebuilt, but later, during the Swedish Deluge, it was destroyed and gradually fell into ruin. In the 19th and early 20th century it changed owners and served as offices and storage; its present shape is the result of rebuilding in the early 20th century.
The museum today looks after the castle with its tower, the tunnels under the castle hill dating from the 18th–20th century, and the 19th-century town hall on the Main Square (Rynek Główny) with relics of the former town hall. In the castle visitors can see an archaeological exhibition, an exhibition on the history of the town, interiors of a pre-war burgher's home and a reconstruction of World War I trenches; in the town hall, the story of Oświęcim's history.
