About the museum
The Podgórze Museum is a branch of the Kraków Museum and continues the activity of the Podgórze History House (Dom Historii Podgórza), which from 2003 on the initiative of the Council of District XIII Podgórze collected souvenirs and archival materials on the history of the town of Podgórze and later of the Kraków district. The Podgórze History House ended its activity under that name at the end of 2015, and from 2016 it was transformed into a branch of the Kraków Museum.
The seat of the museum is the historic coaching inn Pod św. Benedyktem from the late 18th century at ul. Limanowskiego 51. Construction and adaptation work lasted from 2015, and the investment cost more than PLN 11 million net, of which almost PLN 4 million came from an EU grant. The official opening took place on 26 April 2018.
Podgórze was a separate town from 1784 to 1915, and later it was incorporated into Kraków. The permanent exhibition “Miasto pod Kopcem Kraka” (The Town under Krak's Mound) tells its history from legendary times to the present day, using recorded commentaries, witness accounts and interactive elements for children. The museum also runs educational activities for kindergartens and schools, events for parents with children, and “Ciche godziny” (Quiet Hours).
