About the museum
The idea for the museum emerged in 2004, when the City of Kraków bought the buildings and land of the former Schindler’s Factory at ul. Lipowa 4 with a view to a new cultural institution. In 2005 the city obtained a grant from the Ministry of Culture to carry out the project.
The building design was prepared by the Claudio Nardi Architetti studio; the plan included one new building and the adaptation of six existing industrial buildings. Construction began in mid-2009, and the building, with a usable area of about 10,000 square metres, was handed over in November 2010. The museum was solemnly opened on 19 May 2011.
MOCAK is a cultural institution of the City of Kraków. The museum’s mission is to explain the meaning of art by pointing to its ethical and cognitive values and its links with everyday life. Besides the exhibitions, the institution runs a rich educational programme, a library and a bookshop.
