About the museum

The Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art is located on the first floor of the Sukiennice, in the heart of the Main Market Square in Kraków. The halls of the Sukiennice were returned to the city after renovation and reconstruction in 1877–1879. In 1879 Henryk Siemiradzki donated the painting “Pochodnie Nerona”, which became the first work in the collection of what later became the National Museum; dozens of further canvases were donated by other artists.

The gallery belongs to the National Museum in Kraków and presents Polish art of the 19th century. The centrepiece, hanging on the main axis of the halls, is Siemiradzki’s monumental work depicting the persecution of the first Christians. The gallery also shows large historical paintings by Jan Matejko and works by other Polish painters of the period.

The branch has a lift, a separate cloakroom and a toilet for people with disabilities, as well as a café with a terrace. Visiting without a guide is covered by the ticket for the permanent exhibition, and an audio guide is available for those who want one.
