About the museum
The Izba Pamięci Marii Kownackiej (Maria Kownacka Memorial Room) is located in the former flat of the writer, author of children’s books, including “Plastusiowy pamiętnik” (Plastuś’s Diary), which appeared in book form in 1936. Kownacka received the flat in Żoliborz in Warsaw in 1931 and lived there until her death in 1982.
The place was opened to visitors as early as 1990. It is a branch of the Muzeum Książki Dziecięcej (Museum of Children’s Books), which operates within the Biblioteka Publiczna m.st. Warszawy – Biblioteka Główna Województwa Mazowieckiego (Public Library of the City of Warsaw – Main Library of the Masovian Voivodeship). The flat preserves numerous personal objects, photographs, notes and manuscripts, an extensive collection of the writer’s books, as well as her desk and bookcase.
The collections also include books by Kownacka, studies of her work, letters, photograph albums and theatre puppets. The Izba hosts museum lessons and meetings for children from schools and kindergartens, many of which bear the writer’s name. Librarians guide visitors around the flat and talk about the writer’s life.
