About the museum
The museum is located on the grounds of the parish of St Stanislaus Kostka in Żoliborz, Warsaw, where Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko served in 1980–1984. It was established shortly after his martyr’s death: in the rooms of the lower church it was set up by the then parish priest, Prelate Teofil Bogucki, who gathered the memorabilia of Fr Jerzy that had remained in the parish.
In 2004, on the initiative of the next parish priest, Fr Zygmunt Malacki, the museum received a modern multimedia form. In nine rooms several thousand exhibits are presented: personal belongings of Fr Jerzy, objects connected with his martyr’s death, photographs, and film and sound presentations. The authors of the exhibition present him as a priest who responded to the signs of God and who for years matured towards martyrdom, bearing witness to truth, freedom and love.
The exhibition places Fr Jerzy’s figure against the historical background of 1940–2020, from the Yalta Conference and the events of the Church in postwar Poland, through the pontificate of John Paul II and Solidarity, to martial law. At the museum there is a chapel housing relics connected with Fr Jerzy’s death. The museum also runs educational activities, meetings for schools and students, and a literary competition.
