About the museum
The Szczypiorno Memorial Room is housed in a building from 1905–1907, which originally served as a bathhouse at the internment camp in Szczypiorno. In 1917 legionnaires of Józef Piłsudski, who refused to swear an oath of loyalty to the German Emperor, were held in the local camp. The camp also gave birth to szczypiorniak, that is, handball. In later years the building served as an estate club, a beer hall and the seat of the estate council.
After a renovation lasting from November 2012 to October 2013, the first room was opened on 13 November 2013. Since June 2020 the building has housed Branch No. 6 of the Adam Asnyk Municipal Public Library in Kalisz, and the room in its present form has existed since 2021. The collections come mainly from the association “Szczypiorniak”.
The central element is a model of the camp, from which paths lead to stories about the history of Szczypiorno, the Kalisz Maginot Line, the Ukrainian Cemetery and the former customs house. More than 700 old photographs can be seen here, as well as a replica of a CKM machine gun, pre-war military newspapers and a camp coin. The attic shows the history of handball.
