About the museum
Efforts to establish a museum in Kalisz had been under way since 1883. The institution was officially founded on 17 May 1914 by merging an archaeological museum and a regional museum as the Muzeum Ziemi Kaliskiej (Kalisz Land Museum). Its first seat was the tenement house of Grzegorz Puchalski at Plac Kilińskiego. In 1928 the town took over the museum and moved it to the Kalisz town hall. In September 1939 the institution closed, and in 1941 most of the collections were taken away from Kalisz, and their trace was lost.
After the war the surviving objects were gathered in the town hall; in 1949 the museum received the name Muzeum w Kaliszu, and in 1953 it moved to the former tax office at ul. Kościuszki 12, where it is still located. In 1976 a new wing was opened, a new statute was adopted and the present name, Muzeum Okręgowe Ziemi Kaliskiej, was given. The general renovation of the main building was completed in 2023.
Five permanent exhibitions operate in the main building: historical, archaeological, ethnographic, art, and a room devoted to Tadeusz Kulisiewicz, a graphic artist who bequeathed to his home town his studio and more than 1,300 drawings, prints and sketches. The collections include, among other things, the hoard of cross denarii from Słuszków, a denar of Bolesław the Brave with an arrow, which is considered the oldest Polish coin, and a Roman sword with a smith’s signature. The museum has two branches: the Rezerwat Archeologiczny in Kalisz-Zawodzie and the Dworek Marii Dąbrowskiej in Russów.
