About the museum
The museum was established on 1 October 1998 as the Museum of Urban Engineering. Its home is the historic halls of Kraków’s oldest tram depot at ul. św. Wawrzyńca, where horse-drawn and electric tram sheds, workshops and a power plant once stood. The first plans for such an institution date back to the centenary celebrations of Kraków’s public transport in 1975. In March 2022 the institution changed its name to the Museum of Engineering and Technology.
Over the years the complex was renovated in stages and adapted to the museum’s needs. Later, thanks to EU funding, the building was thoroughly modernised, as a result of which the exhibition space was doubled. New connections between the halls were created, along with a visitor services centre, a conference and education room and a shop, and the courtyard is suitable for outdoor events.
The collections comprise more than three thousand objects: machines, tools and electrical and electronic devices, as well as documentation on technology, industry and public transport in Kraków. The permanent exhibition “Miasto. Technoczułość” (City. Techno-sensitivity) presents the development of technology in cities through twelve fields of engineering. The hall dating from 1912 houses a collection of historic trams, and the museum also runs lessons and workshops for children, as well as the Strefa Klocków (Building Block Zone).
