About the museum
The idea for the museum was put forward in spring 2006 by Sebastian Malinowski, a history teacher at the III Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Adama Mickiewicza in Bydgoszcz (3rd General Secondary School named after Adam Mickiewicz). The museum was solemnly opened on 29 September 2006 in a renovated room in the school courtyard, and the first exhibition was devoted to the history of the Bydgoski Canal. After the death of the founder and first curator in February 2008, the institution was given his name.
Since March 2008 the curator has been Tomasz Izajasz, who developed the exhibition and educational activity. In June 2021 the museum moved into the renovated former kindergarten building at ul. Staroszkolna, which is larger and better adapted to the needs of visitors.
The museum currently presents two permanent exhibitions: “Kanał Bydgoski – historia i rola” (“The Bydgoszcz Canal – history and role”) and “Żegluga na Bydgoskim Obszarze Wodnym” (“Shipping on the Bydgoszcz Water Area”). The first tells who built the canal and when, and how it affected the development of the city; it also shows models of the locks and of the no longer existing Władysław IV Bridge. The second presents the barges and tugs that sail on Bydgoszcz’s waters. The museum also runs museum lessons and workshops, and belongs to the Bydgoszcz TeH2O trail.
