About the museum

The origins of Łazienki go back to the end of the 17th century, when two pavilions, the Ermitaż (Hermitage) and the Łaźnia (Bath House), were built at the foot of the Zamek Ujazdowski (Ujazdów Castle) to designs by Tylman van Gameren for Prince Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski. In 1764 the Bath House inspired the last king of the Commonwealth, Stanisław August, who chose Ujazdów as his summer residence. Łazienki became a symbol of his vision of the state.

The complex includes the Palace on the Island (Pałac na Wyspie) with state rooms, the king’s private apartments and the Royal Painting Gallery; the Old Orangery (Stara Oranżeria) with the Royal Sculpture Gallery, the Gallery of Polish Sculpture and the Royal Theatre; the Myślewicki Palace, the White House (Biały Dom), the Water Reservoir (Wodozbiór) and the Kubicki Stables (Stajnie Kubickiego), which house the Museum of Hunting and Horsemanship. The whole is surrounded by gardens, open daily and free of charge for walkers.

The museum runs educational and exhibition activities, publishes detailed information on accessibility for guests with different needs, organises quiet visiting hours on selected Sundays, and runs creative spaces in the Stara Kordegarda (Old Guardhouse) and the Nowa Palmiarnia (New Palm House).
