About the museum
The Museum of Hunting and Horsemanship (Muzeum Łowiectwa i Jeździectwa) was established on 1 July 1983 by merging two initiatives: a hunting museum, built up from 1977 under the artist Tomasz Konarski, and a horsemanship museum, the Muzeum Konia (Horse Museum). The idea of a hunting museum arose in the 1970s, and its seat was designated in the Łazienki Royal Park, once called Zwierzyniec. The first permanent exhibition, “Wiosna, lato, jesień, zima” (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), opened in the Kantonists’ Barracks in 1985. Since 1 January 2018 the museum has been a branch of the Muzeum Łazienki Królewskie.
The museum occupies two historic buildings. The Kantonists’ Barracks were built in 1826–1828, probably to a design by Wilhelm Henryk Minter, and the Kubicki Stables, also called the Podkowa (Horseshoe), were built in 1825–1826 to a design by Jakub Kubicki. The stables were renovated in 2019–2021. The museum’s profile, combining hunting and horsemanship, makes it unique on the national and European scale; its collections comprise more than 10 thousand exhibits.
The Kantonists’ Barracks used to display a Polish hunting salon from the 19th and 20th centuries, forest animals, birds and exotic trophies, but from 1 July 2026 the building is not accessible to visitors. In the Kubicki Stables visitors can see the Carriage House named after Zbigniew Prus-Niewiadomski, with hippological objects, and the Royal Weaving Manufactory.
