About the museum

The Muzeum Literatury im. Adama Mickiewicza w Warszawie collects and preserves objects and documentary materials related to Polish literature and its historical and cultural background. Its seat is in the townhouses at Rynek Starego Miasta 20, in the so-called Balcerowska townhouse, where fragments of Gothic walls and a mural of the Three Kings from 1515 have survived. The museum also occupies two townhouses on ul. Brzozowa, and the main entrance leads from the Market Square.

All departments and workshops of the museum are housed in the building, including the library, an audiovisual room and exhibition halls. The museum is co-run by the Mazovian Voivodeship self-government and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Apart from its main seat, it runs branches devoted to writers: the museums of Maria Dąbrowska, Władysław Broniewski, Andrzej Strug and Witold Gombrowicz in Wsola.

The main seat shows the permanent exhibition “Adam Mickiewicz 1798–1855”, opened in 1998, with more than six hundred exhibits, including the autograph of “Grażyna”, a page of the manuscript of “Pan Tadeusz”, letters and first editions. Alongside it, the museum presents temporary exhibitions and organises meetings, concerts, workshops and museum lessons.
