About the museum

The Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum is located in the tenement house at ul. Freta 16 in Warsaw’s Old Town, at the place of the scientist’s birth. The institution opened in 1967 as a biographical museum devoted to the Nobel laureate and her family. The idea of gathering memorabilia of Maria Skłodowska-Curie had already emerged before the Second World War, but most of the collection was lost during the Warsaw Uprising.

The building was erected in the 18th century by joining two older tenement houses, and its classicist façade was shaped around 1791 to a design by Szymon Bogumił Zug. In the mid-19th century a girls’ boarding school operated here; from 1859 it was run by Bronisława Skłodowska, Maria’s mother. The tenement house was destroyed by bombing in 1944; in 1951–1954 it was rebuilt on the basis of earlier views, with a façade referring to its state at the end of the 18th century.

The main exhibition is currently “Kim jesteś, Mario?” (Who Are You, Maria?), which opened in April 2025. It shows the various roles of the scientist – daughter, student, researcher, wife, mother and social activist – as well as the few surviving relics, including her correspondence, her last desk and her father’s watch. The exhibition is to remain until a new permanent exhibition is built.
