About the museum
The museum in Wałbrzych grew out of the Towarzystwo Starożytności Ziemi Wałbrzyskiej (Society for the Antiquities of the Wałbrzych Land) and was founded in 1908 on the initiative of Julius Joppich as the Altertumsmuseum für das Waldenburger Gebirgsland. In 1926 it changed its name to the Heimatmuseum in Waldenburg and moved to the Albert Palace at ul. 1 Maja, which remains its seat to this day.
After the Second World War the museum reopened in 1947, and in 1949 it was transformed into a state institution; in 1975 it received the status of a district museum. From its branch in Rogoźnica, the former site of the Gross-Rosen camp, an independent museum was created in 1983. Since 1999 it has been a municipal cultural institution of the Gmina Wałbrzych, and since 2002 it has been listed in the National Register of Museums.
In 2015 the seat was thoroughly modernised and a new exhibition opened, arranged like a former bourgeois residence. The collections number more than 35,000 objects, among which about 15,000 pieces of porcelain and ceramics stand out, including from the Tielsch and Krister manufactories, alongside paintings, furniture and decorative arts. Visits are made with an audio guide.
