About the museum
The Muzeum Rzemiosł Artystycznych i Precyzyjnych im. Jerzego Januszkiewicza (Jerzy Januszkiewicz Museum of Artistic and Precision Crafts) operates at the Cech Złotników, Zegarmistrzów, Optyków, Grawerów i Brązowników m.st. Warszawy (Guild of Goldsmiths, Clockmakers, Opticians, Engravers and Bronze Founders of Warsaw). It has existed since 1966, and since 1971 it has been housed in a historic guild tenement house by the walls of the Old Town. It was established on the initiative of the guild’s members, and many exhibits come from their donations.
From the outset it has collected objects connected with the crafts represented in the guild: goldsmithing, clockmaking, optics, engraving and bronze founding, as well as contemporary products of craftsmen and old tools, implements and equipment. A distinctive feature is the collection of master’s and journeyman’s pieces.
The most valuable part of the collection is a set of clocks showing the development of mechanisms and changes in case styles from the 16th to the 20th century. Of particular historical value is the original Statute of the “Mosiężny” (Brass) Guild, granted and signed by Stanisław August on 3 January 1789, written on parchment and decorated with paintings. The collection also includes pocket watches, musical mechanisms, bronzes, plaques, medals, optical glasses in historic mounts, silverware and jewellery.
