About the museum

The Museum of the University of Gdańsk (MUG) is a university-wide unit whose task is to collect, protect, process and make available the material and immaterial manifestations of the university’s heritage and the history of science. The institution promotes the role of the University of Gdańsk in the scientific, political and cultural history of the Tri-City, the region and the country, and supports other units of the university in building teaching collections.

The seat is at ul. Bielańska 5, in buildings that were revitalised within a project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. As one of the museum’s exhibitions shows, the complex of buildings dates back to the times of the so-called Dom Opatów (House of the Abbots) and serves the university today.

The permanent exhibition tells of the university’s links with the sea, of student life and culture in the 1970s and 1980s, of student strikes and of the work of academics. Visitors view archival photographs and films, documents, examples of former research equipment and personal mementos, and can look into student chronicles full of drawings and caricatures, or leave their mark on library cards hidden in a drawer. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions and events, such as the cycle “MUG: Tu się dzieje!” (Something Is Happening Here!).
