About the museum
The QueerMuzeum Warszawa is being created from the grassroots on the initiative of Lambda Warszawa, the oldest LGBTQ+ organisation in Poland. It is meant to be the first such institution in the country and one of the few in the world, complementing mainstream history and restoring a place to minority histories. According to its own description it is “intentionally incomplete, unfinished, evolving”. The museum is run by director Krzysztof Kliszczyński, and the work is accompanied by a social Programme Council (Rada Programowa).
The seat is in the centre of Warsaw at ul. Marszałkowska 83. On the ground floor is the permanent exhibition “Oś czasu” (Timeline), a calendar of LGBTQ+ history in Poland from 1559 to the beginning of the 21st century, shown in a room of just under 60 m². Smaller temporary exhibitions are to be changed roughly every four months. On the first floor there are an archive, a library in the process of being built, and an intimate meeting place.
The collections are based on the Archive of Lambda Warszawa, gathered since 1997. It numbers more than 100,000 units from 1906–2024: press clippings, magazines, leaflets, posters, documents and photographs. The museum also publishes the magazine “QueerStoria”, and the permanent exhibition has a virtual version available on the website.
