About the museum
The Coleção de Arte Contemporânea do Estado (CACE) was started in 1976 by the State Secretariat for Culture and brings together works by Portuguese and international artists in media such as painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, video and installation. For almost fifty years it was on deposit in leading institutions in Portugal and abroad, without a space of its own. It is under the supervision of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal.
CACE – Centro, in Alcabideche, in the municipality of Cascais, is the collection's first building of its own. The State acquired a former building of the Fundação Ellipse, in an industrial area, which was adapted to its new functions. The space opened to the public on 1 July 2026, with the inaugural exhibition “Dual Sim”, featuring 23 works from the collection.
The centre functions as a hybrid model, dedicated to the study, management and transparency of the collection. In addition to an exhibition area, it opens its collection stores to the public, which can be visited with a mediator, and has technical work areas and an educational service. It does not replace existing contemporary art museums, but supports the circulation of the collection through museums and other exhibition spaces.
