About the museum
The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego opened in September 2009 in Cascais to house the work of the artist Paula Rego, born in Lisbon in 1935 and based in London since 1972. The museum is run by the Fundação D. Luís I, and its central project is to present Paula Rego's career from different perspectives.
The building, designed by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura at the artist's own choice, stands out in the landscape for its two pyramidal structures of equal size and for its red-pigmented concrete. Four wings, divided into sequential rooms, are arranged around a taller central volume, which corresponds to the temporary exhibition room. The interior has a floor of blue Cascais marble, 750 m² of exhibition areas, a shop, a café with a terrace overlooking the garden and an auditorium with 195 seats.
The collection brings together painting, drawing and printmaking from about fifty years of creation, a large textile work and part of the artist's documentary archive. Many of the works have been lent to leading museums, such as the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey and the House of Illustration in London.
