About the museum
The Casa da Memória de Guimarães opened in 2016 as an interpretation centre for knowledge about the culture, territory and history of the city and its people. It is housed in a converted industrial building, the former Pátria plastics factory, and is run by the cultural organisation A Oficina.
The permanent exhibition, “Território e Comunidade” (Territory and Community), is arranged in two main parts. The Nave do Território (Territory Hall) presents maps, documentary representations and imaginative exercises about Guimarães, from prehistory to the founding of the nation, from rural societies to the industrialisation of the Ave Valley and the contemporary era. The Nave da Comunidade (Community Hall) brings together memories, facts, objects and personalities from Guimarães across different periods, to show how memory builds the identity of a community.
The Sala do Repositório (Repository Room) hosts regular cycles of talks and debates, which are audio-recorded and published as podcasts, and allows visitors to consult digital collections of historical photographs of Guimarães. The museum also offers a year-round programme of visits, workshops and events.
