About the museum
The Museu de Agricultura de Fermentões (Fermentões Agriculture Museum) is a community museum, one of the cultural activities of the Casa do Povo (village community house) of Fermentões. The first pieces were collected around 1973 by a group of young people from the parish, from farmers who were getting rid of their farm tools as agricultural work was modernised. The Casa do Povo was founded in January 1977 and, in September that year, organised the first Festa do Agricultor (Farmers' Festival), with an exhibition of agricultural antiques in a room of the former Escola Primária do Motelo (Motelo Primary School).
The museum was set up in that building, constructed in the 1940s with the sponsorship of the parish priest João Fernandes Machado and used as a school until the early 1980s, and it opened in September 1983. Later, works in the former school playground created new rooms, and the space came to be called the Museu de Agricultura de Fermentões.
The route is organised into themed rooms: the Sala do Artesão (Craftsman's Room), with carpentry and a blacksmith's workshop; the Salas do Vinho (Wine Rooms); the Sala das Alfaias Agrícolas (Farm Tools Room); the Sala do Linho (Flax Room); the room on the River Selho, the mills and bread; the Cozinha (Kitchen) and the Quarto do Agricultor (Farmer's Bedroom); and the Sala da Tulha (Granary Room), which also hosts temporary exhibitions. Among the pieces, the tulha (grain bin), made from a tree trunk, stands out at about 1.90 m tall. The museum also has thematic units in two basic schools in the parish.
