Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The present Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves occupies a building designed by the architect Norte Júnior in 1904–1905 and commissioned by the painter José Malhoa as a home and studio. It was the first artist’s house in the capital and received the Prémio Valmor (Valmor Prize) in 1905.

In 1932 the “Casa-Malhoa” was acquired by the physician and collector António Anastácio Gonçalves (1889–1965), who lived there and organised his collection. In 1969, at the collector’s express wish, the building was bequeathed to the Portuguese State to create a museum there.

Extension works were carried out in 1996, to a design by the architects Frederico and Pedro George, who joined an adjacent house, also by Norte Júnior, for the shop and an area for temporary exhibitions. The museum reopened in December 1997 in its current layout. The collection, of about 3,000 works, has three main groups: Portuguese painting of the 19th and 20th centuries, Chinese porcelain, and Portuguese and foreign furniture.
