About the museum
The Museu da Saúde (Health Museum) is an initiative of the Ministry of Health and of the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA, National Health Institute Doctor Ricardo Jorge). Since April 2017 it has presented its exhibition in its future headquarters, the former Neurosurgery Department of the Hospital de Santo António dos Capuchos, in Lisbon, which is reached through the main gate of the hospital.
The opening exhibition, “800 Anos de Saúde em Portugal” (800 Years of Health in Portugal), traces the history of healthcare in the country and brings together some 400 pieces, loaned by partner institutions such as the Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa (Portuguese Red Cross) and the Museu de História Natural e da Ciência (Museum of Natural History and Science). The museum also holds thematic exhibitions in spaces of the INSA and of partner institutions, and every month it publishes an object from the collection in the “Peça do Mês” (Piece of the Month) feature.
Collections and archives held in storage can be consulted for study and research, on request and by prior booking. The museum also provides a virtual space, on the InWeb platform, with access to part of the collection.
