About the museum
The Casa-Museu Fernando de Castro was the residence of a family of collectors of painting, sculpture and decorative arts. The merchant Fernando António de Castro had the house built in the Antas area, on Rua de Costa Cabral, with a design approved in 1893 and an extension in 1908 that added a kitchen and a third floor. In 1918 the inheritance passed to the two children, Maria da Luz and Fernando de Castro.
After the death of Fernando de Castro, collector, artist and poet, his sister Maria da Luz de Araújo Castro donated the house and its contents to the State, fulfilling his wish that a public museum be created. By decree of 15 December 1951, the house was classified and attached to the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis.
The interiors have a revivalist character, in which the wood carving, coffered ceilings, mirrors and furniture stand out and which correspond to the period of construction. The collection consists mainly of learned and popular religious art, Portuguese naturalist painting and decorative arts, as well as a group of caricatures and books by Fernando de Castro. The arrangement of the objects in the rooms is, in essence, the one left by Maria da Luz.
