About the museum
The Ateliê António Carneiro was built in the 1920s as the studio of the painter António Carneiro (1872–1930), a figure of Symbolism, and of his son Carlos Carneiro (1900–1971), who was linked to Modernism. The painter's other son, the composer Cláudio Carneyro (1895–1963), also lived here.
The municipal holdings include about three hundred works by António Carneiro, among them the final study for “A Vida”, the large canvas “Camões lendo os Lusíadas aos Frades de São Domingos” (Camões Reading the Lusiads to the Dominican Friars), self-portraits, family portraits, seascapes, church interiors and views of Porto.
The building underwent a rehabilitation project by the architect Camilo Rebelo, who restored the typology of the painting studio with north light, the link to the adjoining gallery and the relationship between the interior and exterior spaces. The space reopened to the public in September 2026 as a station of the Museu do Porto, with a long-term exhibition extended by works of the sculptor Manuel Rosa.
