About the museum
The Museu da Graciosa, in Santa Cruz da Graciosa, presents the built and movable heritage that the islanders developed to cope with the scarcity of rain. The exhibitions cover rural and urban life, religious life, festivities, agriculture and wine production, showing how the population overcame the difficulties of climate and environment.
The main building, on Largo Conde de Simas, houses the permanent exhibition “Ilha Graciosa: Memória e Identidade de um Povo”, on agriculture, traditional crafts, water, religious worship and popular festivals. Temporary exhibitions are also held throughout the year. The Barracão dos Botes de Santa Cruz presents whaling activity on Graciosa, with utensils and the whaling boat “Restinga”.
The museum has a shop, an auditorium, a garden, a library and a reading room, and is part of the Rede de Museus e Coleções Visitáveis dos Açores.
