Museu Francisco de Lacerda

Museum in Calheta, on São Jorge island, commemorating the conductor Francisco de Lacerda and the island's life, from Flemish settlement to pastoral and fishing traditions.

Opening hours

About the museum

The Museu Francisco de Lacerda, in Calheta, on São Jorge island, pays tribute to the composer and conductor Francisco de Lacerda, the first Portuguese conductor to achieve international fame. It opened in 1991 under the name Museu de São Jorge, in a building acquired in 1984 by the then Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture to set up an ethnographic house.

The museum presents the life of the island from Flemish and Portuguese settlement to pastoral and fishing traditions, seeking to show how sea and land shaped local culture. Among the notable objects are the chavões (decorative stamps) for the sweet bread of the Holy Spirit festivities, woven blankets, evidence of tuna fishing, a Holy Spirit crown, a straw basket and a viola da terra (traditional guitar).

There are daily guided visits and a documentation centre where visitors can read and borrow books. The museum also has a branch at the Igreja de Santa Bárbara, in Manadas (Velas), where guided visits are offered.
