About the museum
The Museu da Presidência da República was inaugurated on 5 October 2004 and is housed in the Palácio Nacional de Belém, the official residence of the President of the Republic. Its collection began with a little over a hundred state gifts left to the Presidency by General Ramalho Eanes, and grew through research into the memory of all the presidents, with relatives and institutions across the country.
Today the museum manages about 4,500 pieces, spread across its collections and the palaces of Belém and the Cidadela de Cascais. It holds state gifts, personal objects, decorations, vehicles, movable heritage of the presidential palaces and the archives of several presidents. In 2008 it received the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra for its research on the Palácio de Belém.
The permanent exhibition combines pieces linked to the heads of state since 1910 with interactive systems. The route begins with the national symbols and ends with the powers, functions and activities of the presidents and first ladies. It includes a film with images of the establishment of the Republic, an interactive timeline and a gallery of official portraits of the presidents.
