About the museum
The MAC/CCB – Museu de Arte Contemporânea e Centro de Arquitetura (Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture Centre) opened in 2023 in spaces of the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) which, between 1993 and 2005, were the Centro de Exposições (Exhibition Centre) and, from 2006 to 2022, the Museu Coleção Berardo. The CCB was designed by Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Salgado.
The museum is dedicated to modern and contemporary art of the 20th and 21st centuries, with attention to interdisciplinary practices and to architecture, and includes an architecture centre. Its collections include the Coleção Berardo, with about 900 works by more than 500 artists, the Coleção Ellipse, which the Portuguese State acquired at the end of 2022 and which is on deposit at the museum, the Coleção Teixeira de Freitas and the CACE collection.
The permanent exhibition “Uma deriva atlântica” (An Atlantic Drift) presents 20th-century art from the Coleção Berardo. The museum also has temporary exhibitions, guided tours and an education service with programmes for families, schools and people with dementia.
