About the museum
The Museu das Flores is housed in the former Franciscan convent of São Boaventura, in Santa Cruz das Flores. It presents life on the island of Flores, located between Europe and America on the transatlantic routes, and deals with themes such as piracy, shipwrecks, whaling, emigration and the island's strategic importance.
In the convent and church, the polychrome cedar ceiling, with plant and floral motifs, and the religious statuary beside the chancel arch stand out. The domestic life rooms bring together household ceramics, spinning and weaving tools, textiles, farm implements, butter-making utensils and objects sent by emigrants from the United States.
On the second floor the island's Atlantic and maritime history is shown, with nautical instruments, salvage objects, pieces made of bone and sperm whale tooth, a launch and coastal fishing gear from 1928, and an interactive model of the shipwrecks from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, concerts and lectures.
