About the museum

The sculptor João Charters de Almeida donated to the Municipality of Abrantes a collection representative of more than half a century of artistic activity, covering sculpture, medal-making, ceramics, tapestry, painting and also jazz, which he played as a flautist. The collection includes pieces in iron, steel, bronze, stone and concrete, and forms the permanent exhibition, spread over 17 rooms, mainly on the first and second floors.

The museum occupies the Edifício Carneiro, in the historic area of Abrantes, beside the castle wall, a house inspired by the chalets of the period. The restoration and extension project followed the principles of UNESCO's heritage charters and added an annexe for support services, whose planted roof extends the garden.

The visit route leaves the house and continues into an outdoor yard with an open-air exhibition, as far as the entrance to the Jardim do Castelo, with a view over the Aquapolis on the River Tagus, where the sculpture “Cidade Imaginária” by the artist himself stands. Charters de Almeida, born in Lisbon in 1935, has monumental works in several countries.

Free admission: Free admission on Sundays, on International Museum Day (18 May), on the day of the city of Abrantes (14 June) and on the museum's birthday (8 December).
