About the museum

The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo in Abrantes is also the Panteão dos Almeida. D. Diogo de Almeida, alcaide-mor (chief castellan), rebuilt it in the 15th century and turned it into the pantheon of the House of the Almeidas of Abrantes, whose members played an important role in Portuguese history in the 15th and 16th centuries and were in many cases buried here.

Besides the rich tomb sculptures, the interior preserves cuerda seca azulejos from Seville, traces of wall paintings and the frame of a Manueline polyptych. In 2021 a new museography replaced, one hundred years later, the Museu D. Lopo de Almeida, created in 1921 as a regional museum.

The visit includes an interactive table, where the various elements of the church can be explored, and a documentary screened in the former sacristy. At the entrance to the upper choir part of the archaeological collection recovered from excavations at the fortress can also be seen. The visit can be completed with the castle, its keep, the Palácio dos Governadores and the Jardim do Castelo.
