About the museum
The Museu de Santa Maria de Lamas, popularly known as the Museu da Cortiça (Cork Museum), was founded by Henrique Amorim (1902–1977) and is a singular case in the history of 20th-century Portuguese museography.
The collection, reorganised since 2004, brings together sacred art, Portuguese statuary, ethnography, natural sciences, 20th-century cork sculpture and cork derivatives, and industrial archaeology. The museum presents itself as an outstanding cultural facility, able to combine several areas of expertise in order to deepen knowledge and preserve Portuguese heritage.
The educational service offers guided tours of the permanent exhibition, thematic tours with or without visual arts workshops, and the programme “O Museu vai até si” (“The Museum Comes to You”). On one Sunday a month there are also activities for families.
