About the museum
The Casa dos Campos is a typical casa vareira where the writer Júlio Dinis lived in 1863; it has been a Property of Public Interest since 1984. The writer, a doctor by training and already ill with tuberculosis, came to Ovar to convalesce and stayed at the house of his paternal aunt, D. Rosa Zagalo Gomes Coelho.
It was there that he found inspiration for some of his main novels, such as As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor, A Morgadinha dos Canaviais and the novella O Canto da Sereia. Júlio Dinis was born in Porto in 1839 and died in 1871, at the age of 31.
The museum opened in 1996 to highlight the writer's stay in Ovar and keep alive the memory of a bygone era. In 2012 the Câmara Municipal de Ovar inaugurated the renovation and extension works on the building.
